Warning Signs of Eating Disorders: Pay attention to the clues in yourself and others
The US Olympic Committee and other organizations suggest looking for signs of an eating disorder, such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia, in yourself or your athletes. Those signs can include:
• Repeated comments about being or feeling fat, and questions such as, “Do you think I’m fat?”
• Weight loss below the ideal competitive or healthy weight.
• Secretive eating, perhaps noted by sneaking food.
• Secretive, additional exercise after a practice is over.
• Repeated disappearances immediately after eating, especially if a lot of food was eaten.
• An obsession with the eating habits of others.
• Excessive physical activity that has no purpose.
