Boot Fabric & Leather Care: Michael's hints and tips
by Michael Hodgson
The fabric and leather on any footwear requires some TLC if you want your purchases to last and remain supple and comfortable. Use the following guidelines:
- For Nubuck leather and fabric on multi-sport and approach shoes, clean with a brass brush and a low pH saddlesoap or Nikwax Leather Cleaner, rinsing thoroughly. Treat the Nubuck with Nikwax Nubuck while the surface is still wet. Aquaseal also packages a Fabric / Leather Care Kit with pH balanced soap, a stiff bristle brush and liquid Aquaseal.
- To treat the fabric, use Techtron M or Scotchguard. Either of these spray-ons should be considered a minimal form of water-resistant protection.
- To clean the oils and dirt that accumulate on sandals-cum-shoes, a product called Sandal-Suds or another one called Sandal Life should do the trick.
- If you don't own cedar shoe-trees, you should because they are the very best way for you to keep your boots in good shape and form while drying them.
